Getting shocked SUCKS ASS

Do you know why I can't wait for winter to get over?

It's not the weather. I can deal with the cold. I live alone, and my front closet can barely close from all my lovely winter coats, hats and scarves. Ive got the clothing which frankly is half the battle.

It's not the trees. I can deal with the nakes trees. I don't feel so blue when I see them. I know they will grow again.

It's not even that it gets dark too early for me to run after work outside.

But if i get shocked one more time, I'm gonna THROW SOMETHING REALLY FAR. I HATE getting shocked. If you know me, you know I HATE getting shocked. I will go to great extremes to avoid getting shocked.

Walking into gym, I will simply wait by the door for someone to open it so I don't get shocked on the handle. I have begun to get violently shocked when I push down the lock to my truck as I head out, so I grab whatever is near me -- a tissue box, my purse, my coffee mug -- to push it down for me. I tap the stupid metal door to my work bathroom quickly so the shock is minimized (what bathroom door shocks. MINE DOES). I close my truck door and other doors with my foot so as to avoid being shocked on that.

I've often thought people must think I'm strange when they see me do odd things like hesitate before touching something or waiting for a door to open. I started thinking about it. It's practically OCD (obsessesive compulsive disorder).

So bring on summer. Bring on air thick with humidity and moisture that makes you sweat before you take a single step outside. Bring it on because in this weather, you see, I don't get shocked.

When I was a kid I had this lamp above my bed to read by. Sometimes, when life was a little boring, I would remove the light bulb, insert my finger, and turn it on until the shock got to my shoulder, then click it off.

This only lasted until I discovered illegal drugs in junior high of course. I got my kicks where I could.

about late winter the carpet makes my hair stand on ends. You need to keep a dryer sheet like Bounce in your pocket, not a whole sheet, maybe a half to keep the shock away. you'll smell fresh too. :)

I ditto the dryer sheet, except that I usually toss it into the dryer with my clothes. Weird, I know. But I don't get shocked all winter, either!

i hate these pink pajamas when I was really little and one night they were super static clingy, they popped and zapped every time I moved. I lifted the blanket looked down and every time I moved my legs I saw tiny blue flashes of static electricity! Like mini lightening bolts. Scared the Bejeezus out of me, but then, a second later, I thought it was kind of cool. But I could never get my pajamas to do that again. -- JB

So I guess an electric blanket is out of the question? :)

I get shocked from vehicles too, what's up with that?

That's so funny!! You're electric! Last night I accidentally shocked Pippin in the face. That had to hurt!

Just an FYI..if you don't want to get shocked...touch the doorknob with your arm or open hand first...there's still a shock, but more surface area absorbs it, so you don't feel it.

Some shocks are bad, some "shockers" are good...sorry I couldn't resist.

I always feel guilty when I go to pet one of my dogs and they get a nasty shock - they look at me like I'm the devil.

I almost lost a case when after arriving at the courthouse; I flung my laptop and destroyed it because of the shock from the car door. I've crashed three computers at work cos I shock them when I get in and try to power them up.

I hate getting shocked too. I also find myself waiting for someone else to open doors and I cringe when I have to touch my car door.

I heard that a good way to avoid it is to hold a metal object (like a key) to the metal surface before you touch it.

I never noticed that this only occured during wintertime. Go figure.

I SO agree with you on this! I laughed all the way through your blog entry 'cuz I can totally relate to what you're saying. The grocery store is the worst! From opening the doors at the freezer section, to cans of canned fruit, (I once even got shocked grabbing a bunch of bananas!!! Who gets shocked while touching a banana? I do!)yes, grocery shopping, which I love to do, can now cause me anxiety. Pity! Thanks for your blog! You made my day knowing that I'm not the only person out there closing the car door with her foot. :-D

I hated getting out of the car in the winter because of shocks, so I decided to do something about it. When you get out, before your bottom leaves the seat, touch and hold onto the metal part at the top of the door (above the window) and keep holding and move your hand to the end of the metal (at the corner of the door) while getting out. You won't get shocked any time after that and sometimes you can hear the static decharge from your hand. Yahoo!

OHH MY GOSH!! You describe me! I HATE GETTING SHOCKED! PLEASE HELP! People stare at me because I do the same thing! Please help! How do I get rid of this!?

It is very difficulty to maintain a professional appearance in a place of business when you are involuntarily screaming profanities from touching the doorknob. Just saying....

When getting out of your car/truck, just make sure BEFORE your left foot touches the ground that you grab exposed metal on your door. I think this allows the whole vehicle to absorb the charge rather than just you. It's awkward as hell at first but totally worth it and easy to play off once you get used to it.
